Spice and Condiment-- Sanskrit words with European accent

We have already discussed the origin of masala, the Urdu-Hindi for spice and its Arabic synonym masaleh.  What about the word ‘spice’ itself? Etymologist say that spice is a derivative of the Latin word ‘species’ which changed to épice in French, and to spice of English around 1175-1225. The Latin word species literally means - appearance, sort, kind; i.e. some sort of identity of an object or organism. Since spices were introduced to Europe from India, it would have been fair that European linguists should have considered an Indian origin for the word spice rather than linking it to a similar sounding species. The special property of spice is its flavour and smell.  One of the Sanskrit words for smell  or flavour is  vAs वास and suvAs सुवास is the word for good smell or fragrance. The word suvAs might have changed to spice due to difference in pronunciation suvAs > sibAs > sipAs > spise > spice / épice.
Another English word for flavouring agent is ‘condiment’.  Its dictionary meaning is “something used to give a special flavor to food, as mustard, ketchup, salt, or spices”. According to English etymology, 'condiment' comes from Latin word condire "to preserve, pickle, season'. Condire is a variant of condere  "to put away, store". Latin word condire changed to Latin  condimentum" or spice, seasoning, sauce," , and then to condiment in Old French  13th century and in English in 15th century.  However, we Indians have been dealing in spices for several millennium. Therefore, no matter how much the pronunciation might have changed, we can easily recognize an Indian word for spice. Spice is all about aroma and flavour. The Sanskrit word  'Gandha.mantam'  i.e.  ‘full of fragrance’  seems to have changed to 'kandha.mantam’ to Latin ‘condimentum' (!) and condiment of French and English. It is the same change of from g in gAy गाय to cow; and dh to D as in dant दंत से dent डेंट. What's your take on it?

मसाला (उर्दू, हिन्दी) और मसालेह (अरबी) शब्द कहाँ से आये ? The Origin of masala (Urdu, Hindi) and masaleh (Arabic)

Masala (Urdu, Hindi) and Masaleh (Arabic)

Masala (Urdu, Hindi) and Masaleh (Arabic) mean spices used to make the foods tasty and full of flavours. Quite often, more than one substance is used as a spice in food. Some spices such as 'garam masala', 'sambar masala', 'chana masala', 'pickle masala', 'pan masala', are in fact a mixture of several spices. Interestingly, the Sanskrit word mishra मिश्र which means mixture has mutated to become masala (Urdu, Hindi) and masaleh (Arabic) –
mishra (Sanskrit) > mishar > mishal > mashala > masala (Urdu, Hindi) / masaleh (Arabic).
Besides, their usage as spice, the words masala (Urdu, Hindi) / masaleh (Arabic) are also used for a variety of mixtures and blend of oils, medicines, and gunpowder for fireworks. Interestingly, the word ‘mixture’ itself is a variation of the past participle of the Sanskrit  mishra (= mix).
mishra > mishrit (past participle of mishra) > mishshrit > michshrit >mikshrit > mixrit  > mixtir > mixture.

माँ-माई बन गयी मम्मी और दादू / दद्दू हो गए डैडी ! Mummy from ma-mai and daddy from dada / daddu!

Waves of modernism swept the Indian society in the early decades after the Independence. Ancient Indian words for mother and father were almost replaced by the English mummy and daddy. Recently, the undercurrent of revivalism that had remained dormant for decades has gained voice. There is talk of 'grandeur' and values of ancient India. In this scenario, some innocent words such as mummy and daddy are also being blacklisted. For some revivalists, the word mummy for mother smells of the mummy from Egyptian pyramids. And the word 'dad' sounds like a 'dead' father. There is an appeal for return to the Indian words for mother and father. While it is true that we had adopted the words mummy and daddy during a blind spree for modernism, it is equally true that the words mummy and daddy are not even remotely connected to any word for death or dead.  In fact, both mummy and daddy are natural sounds spoken by an infant; ma-mai or ma-maiya > mammai / mamaiya > mummy. Similarly, dada> daddu > daddy.

संस्कृत शब्दों वायु और आर्द्र से बना यूरोपियन शब्द वेदर (मौसम) Weather from Sanskrit words vayu (air) and aardra (humidity)

Additional notes:
Aardra and aardrataa are ancient Sanskrit word that mean humidity, wetness.
Shatadru (< shat, ie. hundred + aardra) is the ancient name of the river Satluj.

सीमेंट यानी सहबंध Cement from Sanskrit word sahabandh, i.e. to bind together

Valentine, wedding, valency, bond, husband, PATI, PATNI, BEENDH and BEENDHANI वेलेंटाइन, वेड्डिंग, वेलेंसी, बॉण्ड, हस्बेंड, पति, पत्नी, बींध और बींधनी

Cement is the limestone based material that is used in building construction to join bricks, stones, gravel and sand. Cement is also a general word for anything that binds or unites. Its DNA is made of the Sanskrit word SAHABANDH (to bind together). SAHABANDH सहबंध may have mutated to cement in this manner sahabandh > sayamandh > sayamant > sement > cement.
However, this is what the etymologists have to say according to dictionary.com:
Cement. 1250-1300; < Latin cēmentum, variant of caementum (singular of caementa unprocessed cuttings from the quarry, i.e., rough stone and chips) < *caed-mentom, equivalent to caed (ere) to cut + -mentum -ment; replacing Middle English cyment < Old French ciment < Latin, as above

चक्रीय से बना स्क्रू Screw is a variation of the Sanskrit word chakriya, i.e. circular

Screw is a fastening nail with helical threading. According to VS Apte, the Sanskrit words for screw are KARSHNI (pulling) and VYVARTANKEEL (rotating nail). Both words appear to be as artificial coinage as the word 'lohmarg gamini' for the railway by Monier-Williams. The word screw shares its DNA with the Sanskrit word 'chakriya' (chakriya > chakruya > sakruya > sakruwa > screw. The word chakriya for screw is now extinct in Sanskrit. However, Sanskrit’s European daughters have preserved it with love.

The etymologists have this to say. According to dictionary.com:
"Screw. 1375-1425; late Middle English scrwe, screw (e) (noun); compare MiddleFrench escro (ue) nut, Middle Dutch schrûve, Middle High German schrûbescrew"

कॉकपिट है पत्-कक्ष यानी उड़न-केबिन Cockpit comes from Sanskrit 'pat' + 'kaksh' or flying cabin

According to the etymologists, the word cockpit means "a pit for fighting cocks" from cock (n.) + pit ! and that "it was used in nautical sense (1706) for midshipmen's compartment below decks; transferred to airplanes (1914) and to cars (1930s)" [dictionary.com]. Sorry etymologist. I don't understand the relationship between a pit for fighting cocks and a cabin for pilot in a ship or plane? However, the Sanskrit word kaksh.pat (= flying cabin) seems to foot the bill as a precursor to cockpit. The Sanskrit word 'pat' पत् means fly. It is used in the construction of word PATANG पतंग (= kite, sun, bird, bee, moth, and grasshopper). In Hindi  PATANG पतंग is used for kite and PATANGA पतंगा for moth). The Sanskrit word KAKSH means a cabin, room or chamber. Thus KAKSHAPAT would mean a 'flight cabin'. Who knows whether the Sanskrit kakshpat / patkaksh has changed into cockpit. I also have no idea whether this word has been used for flight cabin in the ancient Indian text 'Vaimaki Shashtra' (Aeronautical Science ) by the sage Bharadwaja. The book was available in the in oral tradition but it put into written version during 1918-1923 by Pandit Shastri Subbarayya.

एक था राजा जिसको सब रावण कहते थे The raja who was known as Ravana

रावण का अर्थ है राजन, न कि रोने-चीखने वाला

Ravan means 'raja'; not 'crying' nor 'screaming'

History was always written by the winners. Therefore, the historical accounts have always been one-sided. History celebrates the winners and depicts the losers as evil forces. Moreover, we in India, have had a very long tradition of writing history in the style of fiction. We find that, almost every ancient story has distorted the name of the defeated king. Just think of it, would any king name his sons as Duryodhana, i.e. evil invincible, or as Dushasan, i.e. evil ruler ? Ancient historians distorted Suyodhan to Duryodhana, i.e. the great invincible to evil invincible; and Sushasan to Dushasan, i.e. good ruler to evil ruler. Take the case of Ravana. According to the Sanskrit etymologists, the word Ravan is derivation of Sanskrit word 'rav' रव' which means 'noise'. The literal meaning of Ravana is 'the crying' or 'the screaming'.  Consider that Ravana,  was the king of the world's most prosperous country of his times. Yes, the technology and splendor of Lanka was superior to that of Ayodhya. So how can the ultimate majestic king be called 'crying' or 'screaming'? Some scholars believe that Ravana may mean 'causing to cry'; he was a tyrant and hence a cause of making people to cry. But this suggestion is ridiculous. No matter how tyrannical a king, he cannot be officially called by adjectives that mean 'crying' or 'causing to cry'. It is to be noted that the authors of the ancient literature and history have almost always used adjective titles rather the proper nouns for names of kings. With this background let us anlyse the DNA of the the word Ravana. I feel that the word raja is the root of ravana.

The word Sanskrit word 'raja' means the ruler. And it comes from 'raj' i.e. brightness. I believe that the word,
'raj', in turn, comes from 'jwal' i.e. fire/ burning:  jwal ज्वल > jyar ज्यर > zar ज़ार  > raja राजा or inverse of zar. Thus 'raj' signified the brightness of fire. When our ancestors learned the techniques of igniting fire, someone who was proficient in doing it would have been able to possess fire 24x7, able to cook food and eat it too and also offer cooked food to others in the tribe. He would also be able to scare he predatory animals by his fire power.  Naturally, someone with fire in a fire-less society would be the king. Therefore, raja seem to be a very ancient word of the time of our  stone-age ancestors. The word raja is documented in the Rigveda, the most ancient text of the word.

Raja mutated to several synonyms--

raja > raya > ray > rai > rau > raut
raja > ray > rav > rao > rawat
raja > raja + ish (god) = rajesh (emperor)
raja > raja + indra (chief god) = rajendra (emperor)
raja> rajan > rayan > rayal > royal > rawal
rajan > rayan > rayaN रायण > raNa राणा
rajan > rayan > rayana > raina रैना
rajan > rayan > ravan > ravaN रावण
raja > ray > rav /rao > ravan > ravaN रावण

Now you know what was the origin of 'ravan means crying' etymology. probably, the misinterpretation was the result of ancient history writers commissioned by the winner's side. Had Ravan not been the biggest villain of Indian culture, the word Ravan would have continued to be one of the synonyms of 'raja'.
