How coconut might have got its name

Once again in the time machine with Rajendra Gupta. This time our ancestors have found a woody hard fruit to crack. What will they call it and why….

Once again in the time machine. Back with the ancestors. By now, they have crafted new Sanskrit words KATH काठ and KASHTHA काष्ठ from the sound of striking wood on the ground. They call every hard thing as KATHIN or KATHOR…

KATH KATH / THAK THAK
KATH काठ is the word for wood
KATH काठ = wood
KATHAK
KATHACH
KATHASH
KASHTHA = wood
KATH> KATHIN कठिन = hard
KATH> KATHOR कठोर = hard

Today our ancestors have found a new fruit. It is dry outside but full of milky water and cream, It is not easy to eat, because of its woody cover with thick hair/ fibres. The ancestors are pondering: What should be its name?....

“KATHIN (hard) should be O.K., KATHOR will also do. May be KESHARI (hirsute).”
Let’s see what changes have occurred over thousands of years in these putative original words for coconut…

The ancestors have cracked the hard nut. Having taken the coconut water/ milk and the cream, they haven’t thrown the woody covering. They are going to use it for drinking water. What are they calling this first utensil:

Let’s return from the past to the present times and check the dictionaries for etymology of coconut and cup….
Word Origin & History
coconut

1613, from Sp./Port. coco "grinning face," on resemblance of the three holes at the base of the shell to a human face.

Word Origin & History
cup

O.E. cuppe, from L.L. cuppa, from L. cupa "tub," from PIE *keup- "a hollow." The Ger. cognate Kopf now means exclusively "head" (cf. Fr. tête, from L. testa "potsherd"). Meaning "part of a bra that holds a breast" is from 1938. [One's] cup of tea "what interests one" (1932), earlier used of persons
(1908), the sense being "what is invigorating."

This blog post is dedicated to my teacher Professor Holenarasipur Yoganarasimham Mohan Ram. I and my class fellows haven’t forgotten his lectures on coconut, mango and other plants in Economic Botany classes and his magical storytelling style even after more than three decades.
