How cabbage and cauliflower might have got their names पत्ता गोभी और फूल गोभी का नामकरण कैसे हुआ होगा

Travel in a time machine with Rajendra Gupta when ancestors come across cabbage for the first time. They are trying to find if something is hidden in leafy layers of cabbage... राजेंद्र गुप्ता के साथ टाइम मशीन से अतीत में चलिये, जहाँ हमारे पुरखे परेशान हैं कि पत्ता गोभी ने अपने पत्तों में, क्या छुपाया है, और कहाँ छुपे हैं फूल जैसी दिखने वाली गोभी के फूल!

In the time machine once again. We are with our ancestors. Walking through the jungles. Searching for new edible plants. Today, we find a bizarre plant. A ball of leaves. There is something deep inside the ball that is hidden with leaves. They remove leaves one by one. Even the last leaf is gone. But nothing is found inside. Ha! ha! ha! How secretive is this plant. Listen all. The name of this plant is now GOPYA PATRA (Sanskrit words for ‘to keep secret’ + leaf)!	टाइम मशीन में एक बार फिर। पहुँच गए हम फिर से पुरखों के पास। जंगल-जंगल घूम रहें रहे हैं। कुछ नए खाद्य पौधो की तलाश है। आज मिला है एक विचित्र पौधा। पत्तों की गेंद सा। कुछ है, जो ढका हुआ है पत्तों से। एक-एक पत्ती हटा रहें हैं। परत-दर-परत, क्या छुपाया हैं, इस पौधे ने, न जाने अपने अंदर? लो आखिरी पत्ती भी हट गयी। कुछ भी नहीं है अंदर, अरे कुछ भी नहीं। हा हा हा ! कितना गोप्य रखा था इसने। गोप्य पौधा! गोप्य पत्तियाँ! सुनो सुनो सब। इस नए पौधे का नाम है ‘गोप्य पत्र’।

Ancestors keep moving. Another plant. A bizarre flower! Looks like a flower, but not exactly a flower.   There are no petals, no pollen. Butterflies aren’t visiting it. Its leave look like cabbage leaves. Is it a new type of cabbage? An old Hindi song is playing on FM radio of our time machine… “I asked for flower.. The old man brought me cauliflower…”	पुरखे चले जा रहें हैं। एक और पौधा। उसमें लगा है एक विचित्र फूल। देखने में तो फूल है, किन्तु शायद फूल नहीं हैं। इस फूल में पंखुड़ियाँ नहीं हैं। पराग भी नहीं है। तितली-भँवरे भी इस पर नहीं आते। पौधे की पत्तियाँ तो गोभी के पौधे जैसी ही हैं। यह भी एक  नई गोभी है? टाइम मशीन के एफएम रेडियो में संगम फिल्म का गाना बज रहा है.. “मैंने माँगा फूल बुड्डा गोभी ले के आ गया ...”
Days later, ancestors see that the bizarre flower is changing. Each white dot on it is getting transformed into a flower bud. The flower looking cabbage is now turned into an inflorescence of yellow flowers, a bouquet! Got it. That was the secret. The flowers were hidden. The plant is to be named as: Flowering GOBHI/ cabbage i.e. secretive flower. Get it.	कुछ दिनों बाद पुरखे देख रहें हैं कि यह विचित्र गोभी का फूल बदल रहा है। अरे! इस फूल जैसी दिखने वाली गोभी पर हर सफेद कण एक पुष्प कालिका में बदल चुका है। और यह फूल जैसी दिखने वाली गोभी अब पीले फूलों का गुच्छा बन चुकी है। तो इस पौधे का गोपनीय रहस्य यही था—इसके फूल गोप्य थे। लो सूझ गया नाम: फूल गोभी।
The westbound ancestors don’t want to call it a PHOOL GOBHI i.e. flowering cabbage, they want to call it with Sanskrit word for flower buds.. they insist : we shall call it what it actually is:   PRAPHULLA KALI(YA) = flower bud(s) KALIYAN PRAFULLA KALIYA FULLAPRA KAYALI FULABAR CAULI FLOWER	पुरखों का एक दल पश्चिम जाने को तैयार है। वे कह रहें: हम इसे फूल-गोभी नहीं कहेंगे, फूल जैसी दिखने वाली गोभी को हम वही कहेंगे जो यह असल में है: फूल कलियाँ या फिर  प्रफुल्ल कलियाँ कलियाँ प्रफुल्ल कलिया फुल्लप्र कयाली फ्लूपर काऊली फ्लॉबर काऊली फ्लॉवर (अँग्रेजी)
