स्वाधीनता के शुरुआती
दशकों में हमारे देश में आधुनिकतावाद की लहर चली। उस दौर में माता-पिता के लिए हज़ारों
वर्षों से चले आ रहे देसी शब्दों का स्थान इंगलैंड से आए मम्मी-डैडी ने ले लिया।
किन्तु आजकल भारत में दशकों से दबा हुआ पुनरुत्थानवाद ज़ोर पकड़ रहा है। प्राचीन काल
के 'वैभव' और मान्यताओं की बात चल
रही है। मम्मी-डैडी जैसे कुछ मासूम शब्द भी काली सूची में आ रहे हैं। कुछ पुनरुत्थानवादियों को मम्मी शब्द में मिस्र के पिरामिड में रखी ममी की बदबू आती है
और प्यारे डैडी / डैड में उन्हे पिता की
मृत्यु दिखाई दे रही है । माता-पिता शब्दों की वापसी का आग्रह है। जहां यह सच है
कि हमने मम्मी-डैडी जैसे शब्दों को आधुनिक बनने की अंधी होड़ में अपनाया था, वहीं यह भी सच है कि
मम्मी का मृत्यु / मृतक, या ममी से और डैडी / डैड का डैड (dead) से दूर का भी कोई संबंध नहीं है। मम्मी-डैडी, ये दोनों शब्द माता-पिता
के लिए बोले जाने वाले नैसर्गिक शब्दों के ही उच्चारण रूप हैं। ये दोनों शब्द शिशु द्वारा बोले जाने वाले पहले शब्दों में से हैं। जैसे
माँ-माई या माँ-मैया > मामाई / मामईया > मम्मी। इसी तरह दादा > दैदा > दैदी > डैडी। या दादा > दादू > दद्दू > दद्दी > डैडी ।
Waves of modernism swept the Indian society in the early decades
after the Independence. Ancient Indian words for mother and father were almost
replaced by the English mummy and daddy. Recently, the undercurrent of
revivalism that had remained dormant for decades has gained voice. There is
talk of 'grandeur' and values of ancient India. In this scenario, some innocent
words such as mummy and daddy are also being blacklisted. For some revivalists, the word mummy for mother smells of the mummy from Egyptian pyramids. And the
word 'dad' sounds like a 'dead' father. There is an appeal for return to the
Indian words for mother and father. While it is true that we had adopted the
words mummy and daddy during a blind spree for modernism, it is equally true
that the words mummy and daddy are not even remotely connected to any word for
death or dead. In fact, both mummy and daddy are natural sounds spoken by an infant; ma-mai or ma-maiya
> mammai / mamaiya > mummy. Similarly, dada> daddu > daddy.
