मसाला (उर्दू, हिन्दी) और मसालेह (अरबी) शब्द कहाँ से आये ? The Origin of masala (Urdu, Hindi) and masaleh (Arabic)

मसाला (उर्दू, हिन्दी) और मसालेह (अरबी) एक शब्द के रूप हैं जिसका अर्थ है भोजन को सुगंधित और स्वाद बनाने का पदार्थ। प्रायः एक से अधिक पदार्थ मसाले के रूप में भोजन में प्रयोग होते हैं। और कुछ मसाले तो अनेक वस्तुओं का मिश्रण होते हैं, जैसे ‘गरम मसाला’, ‘सांभर मसाला’, ‘चना मसाला’, ‘अचार मसाला’, ‘पान मसाला’ आदि।  मिश्रण शब्द संस्कृत के मिश्र से बना विशेषण है। यह ‘मिश्र’ शब्द ही बिगड़ कर मसाला और ‘मसालेह’ बन गया है –

मिश्र (संस्कृत) > मिशर > मिशल > माशल > मशाला  > मसालेह (अरबी) / मसाला (उर्दू, हिन्दी)।

भोजन में सुगंधित मिश्रण के अतिरिक्त मसाला और मसालेह शब्दों का प्रयोग कई अन्य मिश्रणों के लिए भी होता है, जैसे, तेल, औषधियाँ, और आतिशबाज़ी का बारूद।

Masala (Urdu, Hindi) and Masaleh (Arabic)

Masala (Urdu, Hindi) and Masaleh (Arabic) mean spices used to make the foods tasty and full of flavours. Quite often, more than one substance is used as a spice in food. Some spices such as 'garam masala', 'sambar masala', 'chana masala', 'pickle masala', 'pan masala', are in fact a mixture of several spices. Interestingly, the Sanskrit word mishra मिश्र which means mixture has mutated to become masala (Urdu, Hindi) and masaleh (Arabic) –

mishra (Sanskrit) > mishar > mishal > mashala > masala (Urdu, Hindi) / masaleh (Arabic).

Besides, their usage as spice, the words masala (Urdu, Hindi) / masaleh (Arabic) are also used for a variety of mixtures and blend of oils, medicines, and gunpowder for fireworks. Interestingly, the word ‘mixture’ itself is a variation of the past participle of the Sanskrit  mishra (= mix).
