रावण का अर्थ है राजन, न कि रोने-चीखने वाला

इतिहास हमेशा विजेताओं द्वारा लिखवाया गया। अतः इतिहास हमेशा एकतरफा लिखा गया। विजेता का गुणगान और पराजित की बुराइयाँ। और तो और, भारत में इतिहास को साहित्य की शैली में लिखने की लंबी परंपरा रही है। लगभग हर कथा में पराजित राजा का नाम तक बिगाड़ दिया गया। जरा सोचिए की क्या  किसी राजा ने अपने बच्चों का नाम दुर्योधन या दुशासन रखा होगा? इतिहासकार ने खलनायकों को बुरे नाम देने के लिए सुयोधन के लिए दुर्योधन ओर सुशासन के लिए दुशासन लिख दिया। अब रावण की बात लें।  विद्वानों का कहना है कि संस्कृत के 'रव' शब्द से रावण बना है। रावण का शाब्दिक अर्थ है -- चीखने वाला, रोने धोने वाला। रावण, अपने समय में, संसार के सबसे वैभवशाली देश का राजा था। जी हाँ, तकनीकी और वैभव में लंका का स्थान अयोध्या से ऊपर था। तो क्या किसी परम प्रतापी राजा का नाम  'रोने वाला' हो सकता है? कुछ शब्द-विद कहते हैं की रावण का अर्थ 'रुलाने वाला' भी हो सकता है; अत्याचारी, अतः रुलाने वाला। लेकिन यह भी हास्यास्पद बात है। कोई राजा कितना भी अत्याचारी हो, उसका अधिकारिक नाम या विशेषण 'रोने वाला' या 'रुलाने वाला' नहीं हो सकता। ध्यान देने की बात है कि प्राचीन साहित्य और इतिहास में, राजाओं के नाम नहीं अपितु गुणसूचक उपाधियों का प्रयोग किया गया है। इसी मान्यता के साथ आज 'रावण' शब्द के 'डी एन ए' की जाँच करते हैं।        

जो राज करे वह राजा। राज शब्द का मूल अर्थ है चमकना। मेरी समझ में राज शब्द आया ज्वल यानी आग से, आग की चमक से (ज्वल > ज्यर > ज़ार zar > राजा)। जब हमारे पुरखों ने आग जलाने की तकनीक सीखी, तब जो आग जला सकता था, जिसके पास 24 घंटे आग थी, जो पका कर खा सकता था, पका हुआ खिला सकता था, आग से हिंस्र पशुओं को डरा सकता था; वही राजा बना होगा। अतः 'राजा' शब्द शायद हमारे पाषाण-कालीन आदिम पुरखों के समय का शब्द  है। संसार की सबसे प्राचीन  पुस्तक ऋग्वेद में राजा शब्द राजा के अर्थ में ही मिलता है।

अब आप ही बतायेँ, संस्कृत के विद्वानों द्वारा की गयी 'रोने वाला' या रुलाने वाला जैसी व्याख्याएं  कहाँ से आयीं ? शायद, विजेता के द्वारा कराये गए इतिहास लेखन से ! अगर रावण हमारे देश का सबसे बड़ा खलनायक न बना होता तो आज रावण शब्द राजा /राजन का पर्यायवाची शब्द होता।   

नोट: वाल्मीकी रामायण (3/33/1) में 'रावणम लोकरावणम' पद का प्रयोग है, जिसका अर्थ है -- लोकों को रुलाने वाला रावण। प्रसंग -- रावण की बहन शूर्पनखा रो रो कर रावण को ताने दे रही है। भाव है कि आज लोगों को रुलाने वाले की बहन को किसी ने रुला दिया है। किन्तु इससे यह सिद्ध नहीं होता कि रावण का अर्थ रुलाने वाला है।

History was always written by the winners. Therefore, the historical accounts have always been one-sided. History celebrates the winners and depicts the losers as evil forces. Moreover, we in India, have had a very long tradition of writing history in the style of fiction. We find that, almost every ancient story has distorted the name of the defeated king. Just think of it, would any king name his sons as Duryodhana, i.e. evil invincible, or as Dushasan, i.e. evil ruler ? Ancient historians distorted Suyodhan to Duryodhana, i.e. the great invincible to evil invincible; and Sushasan to Dushasan, i.e. good ruler to evil ruler. Take the case of Ravana. According to the Sanskrit etymologists, the word Ravan is derivation of Sanskrit word 'rav' रव' which means 'noise'. The literal meaning of Ravana is 'the crying' or 'the screaming'.  Consider that Ravana,  was the king of the world's most prosperous country of his times. Yes, the technology and splendor of Lanka was superior to that of Ayodhya. So how can the ultimate majestic king be called 'crying' or 'screaming'? Some scholars believe that Ravana may mean 'causing to cry'; he was a tyrant and hence a cause of making people to cry. But this suggestion is ridiculous. No matter how tyrannical a king, he cannot be officially called by adjectives that mean 'crying' or 'causing to cry'. It is to be noted that the authors of the ancient literature and history have almost always used adjective titles rather the proper nouns for names of kings. With this background let us anlyse the DNA of the the word Ravana. I feel that the word raja is the root of ravana.  

The word Sanskrit word 'raja' means the ruler. And it comes from 'raj' i.e. brightness. I believe that the word, 'raj', in turn, comes from 'jwal' i.e. fire/ burning:  jwal ज्वल > jyar ज्यर > zar ज़ार  > raja राजा or inverse of zar. Thus 'raj' signified the brightness of fire. When our ancestors learned the techniques of igniting fire, someone who was proficient in doing it would have been able to possess fire 24x7, able to cook food and eat it too and also offer cooked food to others in the tribe. He would also be able to scare he predatory animals by his fire power.  Naturally, someone with fire in a fire-less society would be the king. Therefore, raja seem to be a very ancient word of the time of our  stone-age ancestors. The word raja is documented in the Rigveda, the most ancient text of the word.

Now you know what was the origin of 'ravan means crying' etymology. probably, the misinterpretation was the result of ancient history writers commissioned by the winner's side. Had Ravan not been the biggest villain of Indian culture, the word Ravan would have continued to be one of the synonyms of 'raja'.
