मोहनजोदारो के मेलूहा The Meluha of Mohenjo Daro

The english version 'The Meluha of Mohenjo Daro'  is given at the end of this article.

The Meluha of Mohenjo Daro

Amish Tripathi’s ‘The Immortals of Meluha’ and the two other novels of his Shiva-trilogy have created history. The three books have sold 1.5 million copies in the last two years and have become the fastest selling books in the history of book publishing in India. Amish’s story is set in ancient India’s Mohenjo-daro, Harappa and other places and depicts their imaginary life. Amish has used the term Meluha for Mohenjo Daro.  Meluha is a very ancient word. According to the ancient texts of the Sumer civilisation (Iraq) they had trade ties with Meluha.
If Meluha was indeed the India of the Indus civilization, we have no idea as to why the Sumerians gave us that name. Many scholars have speculated about the meaning of Meluha. According to one theory, the Sumerians imported sesame oil from India; sesame oil, is called ELLU in Sumerian (sesame is also known as ELLU in South Indian languages); therefore ELLU and MELUHA are related words. It is difficult to understand why the Sumerians would have called us MELUHA on the basis of oil alone while they imported a very large number of articles from India. A European scholar has gone to the extent of suggesting that the word MALECHCHH used in Sanskrit for barbaric and uncouth is a variation of MELUHA. It is difficult to understand as to why the people of Sapta-Sindhu would use the word MALECHCHH  (barbarian, outcast) if it was meant to used for them!
It is well known that we, the people of India called ourselves BHARAT since time immemorial.  The name BHARAT is found in many ancient Indian texts. However, the Sumerian, the Iranians, and the Arab, all living in the west across the river Sindhu used to call us Hindu. This is because while they wanted to call us ‘Sindhu’ they called us Hindu due to their habit of pronouncing ‘s’ as ‘h’. The Europeans pronounced Hindu as Indu and that is how they called us Indu or Indian. When the people from across the Sindhu/ Indus came and ruled us, we stated calling ourselves as Hindu.  When the Europeans occupied India and started ruling us , we learned to call ourselves India.

Imagine the scenario of the Saraswati-Indus traders sailing to the west in the times of Mohenjo Daro. They might have called the people of the first / the neighbouring port by the Sanskrit word  ‘PARSHVA’ or the ‘nearby’ people. The word PARSHVA might have changed from Parshva> Parasya> Parsi> Persian/FARSI. They might have called the people living in the east of Mohenjo Daro as POORVI (Sanskrit, eastern). Even today, the people of the western Uttar Pradesh, call the people of the eastern Uttar Pradesh as POORABIA (the eastern).  Imagine the Sumerian calling the Mohenjo Daro people as POORVI. If so, the word POORVI might have transformed into MELUHA in the following way: POORVI > Pulvi> Mulvi> Melyi> Melhi> Meluha! Another possibility: they called us POORVI but due to the imperfect nature of the script they wrote POORVI as MELUHA?
How did you find this flight of imagination?

  4. I looked up the Sumerian dictionary. Could'nt find the word Meluha, but found that 'alu' means city. 'Melu' means 'bright'. 'Melam' means 'radiance' or 'Nimbus'. I would like to think 'Meluha' means 'Radiant city'!

    2. Mesopotamian and indus valley cultures were Vaidik cultures. The maximum Antiques and artifacts found in excavations of these sites are described in Vedas and are still in use in indian society through the ages. Theory of Aryan invasion was an illusion of european scholars as they didn understand our ancient culture and sanskrit language. the Hisotry of ancient india and ancient world cultures cannot be written without the knowledge of sanskrit languange and affluent indian culture. The expension of Vaidik Culture was from Syre darya (Seeta Nadi), Amu Darya (Vakshu Nadi), Pamir Knot (Meru Parvat) and Caspian Sea (Kashyap Sagar) in North & west to "Ganga in east-south. The cultures, societies, ancient relegions, languages of all this Region are same origin.

    3. Thanks Attri ji. I agree with your observations about the spread and influence of ancient Indian culture. I would like to read about the identification of "Syre darya (Seeta Nadi), Amu Darya (Vakshu Nadi), Pamir Knot (Meru Parvat) and Caspian Sea (Kashyap Sagar)". Kindly suggest references.

  7. Meluha is the corruption of ancient indian word MALAV . It is written MALVAH OR MALVAHA in sanskrit. it was Melloi or Melloe of greek hostorians i.e. Arrian Atrabo, Nearchuss etc. Pictures, portraites excavated in Sumerian sites show the similarity between sanskrit & Sumerian cultures. Sanskrit Malva corrupted as Meluva, Melua of Meluha and further this word changes as Melloi in greek. MALAV as a state or City, gansangh, & race is described in Mahabhashya, Kashika, Mahabharat, Puranas & ancient sanskrit literature and greek historians as well. Malavas were living on the bank of Satluj in punjab during Alexendar's Invasion.

    1. Thanks a lot for Attri ji a very interesting and stimulating suggestion. But I am unable to find the word malvah/ malavaha/ malav etc in the Sanskrit dictionaries in the sense of the city or race. Can you please suggest some ref. Some words for city e.g. puri, palli, ville certainly seem to be related to meluha : puri > puli > muli > melu > meluha. Interestingly, one of the dictionary meanings of the sanskrit word mool मूल is 'chief or principal city' ! Therefore how about Puri >puli > muli > melu > mool > meluha? Puri > puli > pule > bule > vule > vile > ville. Puri > puli > pulli > palli.
The Malva region covering much of the Indian Punjab may have derived its name from the malva tribe that lived in the Western Punjab (now in Pakistan), and the malva may have been the original meluha inhabitants of the the Indus valley who migrated to other regions after ecological destruction.

  9. It makes good sense to imagine meluha is corrupt form of malava. Sumarians, due to peculiarity of their pronunciation might have pronunced malava as meluha.Greek historians referred these people as Malloi, who gave stiff resistance to Alexander's invation caused his retreat after inflicting serious injuries on him in the year 326 BC.

    2. Still a lot of research is required to fill in the blanks.malavas,as they move to south became Mallavas established kingdoms and ruled over lands as far south as Karnataka.the formidable ikkeri kingdom in Karnataka is the one of the such kingdom established by Mallavas which ruled a considerable part of the state for more than two and a half centuries.

    1. Meluha is an ancient word that was used by the Sumerians for India. Obviously, Amish is not the first person who used Melhua word per se. But yes, Amish is the 'first Indian' who has used the word Meluha for India. Before him no Indian had used the word Meluha for India.
